Here’s what the Mayor wrote about Judge Eugene Anderson:
Judge Eugene "Gene" Anderson served the City of Anacortes and Skagit County as our Municipal Court and District Court Judge for over 36 years. When he retired in 1994, he was longest serving District Court Judge in the State of Washington.
Judge Anderson was born in Anacortes and spent most of his life here. After graduating from the University of Washington Law School in 1957, he joined Leroy Todd's law practice before striking out on his own. He opened and office on 8th St, first partnering with Steve Mansfield and later with James Anderson. He served on the Washington State Bar Examiners Committee from 1966 until 2007. Judge Anderson was honored by the State Bar Association with a Lifetime Achievement award.
Judge Anderson was known as Anacortes's Judge. He was revered and respected by everyone in the courtroom. He had a knack for giving stern lectures to defendants, attorneys, and police officers in his courtroom. As a Municipal Court Judge, he served as our community's Justice of the Peace and married many Anacortes couples. He was active in the Anacortes community, serving several terms on the school board, and he was involved with in forming the Anacortes Arts Festival and the construction of the Fidalgo Pool.
In recognition of Judge Anderson's service to the community I am recommending that the court facility be rededicated as the Gene Anderson Municipal Courtroom. A plaque and photo of Judge Anderson shall be displayed in the courtroom to commemorate his service.
