After a winter without a restaurant on the West end of the island, Flounder Bay Cafe is about to return under new ownership. Seattle restaurateur Dino Trapalis says he’ll reopen the restaurant next Thursday.

Trapalis says he’s planning “a very casual menu featuring “reasonable prices, good food and a good location,” adding “not high end.” He said the area deserves a good reasonably-priced restaurant. Trapalis said he’d have a full lounge, too.

Trapalis said he’s been getting ready to open for the past 6 weeks. He said he’s already booked 10 banquets, many of them regular events. Employers of the previous incarnation of Flounder Bay Cafe have been calling and he said he plans to hire many of them.

When I talked to him on Friday, he had set opening for Wednesday, Aug. 26. Then, later in the day he said he realized he has a banquet that day, so re-set the opening for the next day.

Trapalis said he’s worked around Seattle restaurants for many years, focusing primarily on pizza and pasta. A family member owns a restaurant in Sedro-Woolley. He said he’s looking for place to live in Anacortes. He’s not going to try to commute from Seattle.

The previous owners of Flounder Bay Cafe closed it last October. Owner Kari Vanderbosch said they had purchased La Conner Seafood and Prime Rib, then decided to focus on just one restaurant, the one in La Conner. She said she and her family decided it was too hard to run two restaurants.
