The Arts Commission is set to explain a proposal to the City Council on Monday that the city adopt a program to display loaned sculptures on a rotating basis. The idea would be that the Arts Commission would review applications from artists and decide which works to display. The proposal is similar to one in La Conner.
If the city were to adopt the proposal, about a dozen sculptures could be displayed on property owned by the city or private businesses. Even the median on R Ave. could be used.
The program would give artists exposure and shouldn’t cost the city or private property owners any thing. And, the city could get 30 percent of any sculpture sold as a result of the display. The city would have the opportunity to purchase loaned sculptures, too.
The City Council isn’t set to decide on the plan at it’s Monday meeting, which is billed as a study session.
Proposal: Expand public art here
