Wide range of Senior College classes

Registration is open for the seven afternoon and two evening classes being offered by Anacortes Senior College for its Spring term, starting April 15. Classes are from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays. All classes are for six weeks, unless otherwise noted, and are located at Anacortes Middle School, 2200 M. Avenue.

The Senior College offers classes to adults 50 years and older. Cost is $30 for a six-week course and $20 for a three-week course. Tuesday afternoon

Introduction to Poetry - Dr. Perry Higman delves into mostly American works, but also into the great poets of England, Scotland and Ireland.  No writing is required. Emphasis is on enjoyment.

Anacortes History – In this three-week class, author Bret Lunsford uses photographs of mills, canneries, shipyards, etc. in addition to the memories of guest speakers, in order to explore the history of Anacortes from the 1880’s to the present.   

Raptors of Skagit Valley – Brian Scheuch presents his unique perspective of preying raptors: eagles, hawks, owls and falcons. Migrating, sea and shore, and songbirds may be covered in this three-week class.

Northwest Art - In this three-week course, Jasmine Valandani introduces the spring exhibition of the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner with lectures focusing on landscape and abstract painting. The final class will be a tour of MoNA exhibit.

Thursday afternoon

The Concerto: From Early Beginnings to the present –In a surprising and beautiful journey director and composer Roupen Shakarian uses new and familiar masterpieces to explain the artistry and virtuosity of this staple of the classical concert stage.

Governments and Ideologies – in this new class from Dr. Michael Newbrough, examine the ideologies used by some to justify power overs others, and learn of the representative governments which evolved, including our unique American system.

Introduction to Norwegian – designed for the very beginner, Susan Easthouse instructs the basic sentence structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation of Norwegian phrases. Norway’s history and culture will also be discussed.

Thursday evenings

French: Grammaire, Geographie,Gastronomie – Susan Redd studies the language and culture by having students prepare French dishes and sharing them with the class. Learn dining etiquette, vocabulary and grammar.  Class limited to 20.

Retirement Planning -   Thor McIlrath teaches how to manage investment risks, how to use the new tax laws to your advantage and how to adjust estate planning to function under the new laws.
