Anacortes woman charged with second-degree murder

APD officers responded to a 911 call placed by a 26-year-old Anacortes man, who reported Thursday evening, Aug. 25, that a man had been shot in the area of 30th Street and R Avenue. There were additional reports of a woman running on foot toward Commercial Avenue. Thomas returned to the scene and called 911.

Officers performed CPR on the man, observing a small wound on his back resembling a gunshot wound. He was unresponsive, and the responding officers could not find his pulse. He was transported to Island Hospital and pronounced dead.

Shawndrisa Hicks, the suspect’s mother, spoke to officers and said Thomas had shot White during a domestic violence altercation between Hicks and White outside Hicks’ apartment in the 800 block of 30th Street.

Hicks reported pain to the tops of her feet and general pain to her eyes and head. She had no visible injuries and did not require medical care. Hicks told an officer that she and Thomas had initially run from the scene but had returned after observing that White no longer posed a threat.

Officers arrested Thomas and booked her into Skagit County jail on an investigative hold for first-degree murder early Friday morning. The Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Thomas with second-degree murder on Monday, Aug. 29, in Skagit County Superior Court. She is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Thursday, Sept. 1.
