Green Dot is a legitimate business out of Monrovia, California. They sell pre-pay, reloadable debit cards. The cards can be reloaded with funds online, over the internet.
Scammers have found a number of ways to contact people and convince them that they need to go to Green Dot's website and set up an account and put funds in it. Many times the scammer will contact an innocent person and claim to be collecting for some outstanding debt; like a utility bill or a mortgage payment. Often, the scammer will claim that they are calling from Publisher's Clearinghouse or the state lottery.
No matter what lie they choose, the bottom line is that they will ask the victim to go to Green Dot online and transfer money to an online account. Once the victim has placed money in to the online account the scammers transfer the funds to another location and it is gone.
This is an easy scam to defeat. Green Dot is not a legitimate method for any business to collect funds. If anyone calls you and encourages you to go to Green Dot or a similar service and transfer money...it's a scam.
