March Point resident Don Munks, who recently retired from the Skagit County commissioners, says he wants the governor to name him director of the state Agriculture Department.
Munks,a Republican, says he has sent a letter of interest and a resume to Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat. He says he has been impressed with her commitment to agriculture, a commitment he shares.
Bob Gore has been Acting Director of the Ag department since May 2008. In the past, the governor has indicated a preference for appointing someone from the farm-intensive eastern part of the state.
Munks retired from the county commissioners after suffering a heart attack in 2007. But, he told a reporter he’d re-enter public life for a job like the Ag director’s position. “There’s going to be a lot of work to it, but if you’ve been a farmer and you’re used to working all the time, it’s not that big a change.”
