The state Transportation Department has released new details about their plan for a roundabout at Sharpe’s Corner and have scheduled an open house to show the plan to the public.

The latest roundabout design includes a bypass lane for traffic heading west to Anacortes. And, traffic heading east out of Anacortes toward Burlington will go under the roundabout in a tunnel.

Many South Fidalgo residents have complained that a roundabout at Sharpe’s Corner will make things more difficult for then to get onto Highway 20 at the Miller/Gibralter roads intersection, just south of Sharpe’s Corner.

Currently, the traffic light at Sharpe’s Corner causes breaks in traffic which allow motorists to get onto the highway. Without a light at Sharpe’s Corner, residents are concerned there won’t be breaks in the traffic.

Others have voiced concerns that the DOT is building a highway that is what one person calls a “Great Wall” blocking bicycle and pedestrian access across Highway 20, cutting the island in two.

The City Council has okayed a resolution asking the DOT to consider pedestrians and bicyclists as they make improvements to Highway 20 through the island.

DOT’s open house is set for Thursday, Sept. 25, from 4:30 - 7:30 pm at the Anacortes Middle School.
