The Elwha had a problem with the propulsion control cooling system while on a run in the islands. It sailed to the state Transportation Department’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility for repairs.
Heavier than usual traffic on the Anacortes to Friday Harbor route was expected Friday and Saturday because of the San Juan County Fair.
The Elwha was built in 1967 and re-built in 1991. The Elwha can carry 1076 passenger, in addition to 144 vehicles.
The Elwha has a reputation as being incident prone. She has rammed numerous docks, run aground multiple times and was even taken on an alternate route by a captain in the San Juan Islands, who was trying to show a woman passenger her house from the water.
