Ajaycia Pillman and Brittaney Walkley are this year's recipients for the Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award for their leadership of the Anacortes High School band program.
Pillman and Walkley are the drum majors in the AHS band. When their band teacher went out on leave, these students took on a significant leadership role to continue to support the program. They organized the holiday parade, put together an impromptu summer band camp, and managed the band's Facebook page to help respond to parents' questions.
The Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award was created in 1977, upon Mr. Brodniak's retirement as Superintendent of the Anacortes School District, "to foster growth of the cultural arts in the District." The award is given each spring to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or community organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District during the current school year.
Both students have taken on these additional responsibilities while keeping up with school and other extracurricular activities, as well as juggling part-time jobs. Next year, Ajaycia plans to attend Western Washington University, and Brittaney plans to attend Skagit Valley College.
The school district invites the community to a reception to recognize Ajaycia and Brittaney on Thursday, May 18 from 5 - 5:45 p.m. in the District Office Board Room (2200 M Avenue). The program will start at 5:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.
