Events cancelled because of wind forecasts

The threat of high winds has caused several local events to be cancelled this weekend. UPDATE All soccer games for Sat., Oct 15 are postponed...word from city Parks and Rec Dept.

PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT - Anacortes Parks and Recreation has postponed their annual Dallas Kloke Mt. Erie Road & Trail Run. This event is rescheduled to Saturday, October 22, 2016. Please visit the parks and recreation webpage at www.cityofanacortes.org for more information.

MUSEUM - The WT Preston & Maritime Heritage Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday.

HOMECOMING - Anacortes High School has postponed their annual Homecoming Parade this afternoon to next Friday, October 21.  They have also postponed the Homecoming dance from tomorrow night until next Saturday night (the 22nd.)   The Homecoming football game is still on for tonight.

FIRE DEPARTMENT - Anacortes Fire Department Open House is canceled. While we are saddened to cancel these events, the safety of our citizens is of paramount importance. This will allow our Firefighters and Paramedics to focus on Emergency Response should the need arise.

FARMERS MARKET - Anacortes Farmers Market has been canceled (just this Saturday; the market continues through the last Saturday in October – the 29th). If anyone has arranged to pick up something from any of the vendors, there will be someone available inside the Depot (if the power is on) to facilitate pickup. The market will resume the following weekend and continue through the last Saturday in October – the 29th. If you have any questions, please contact the Anacortes Farmers Market at 293-7922.

PARKS DEPARTMENT – Soccer games for this Saturday will continue as scheduled however, a final decision will be made at 7:00 am Saturday morning. Parks staff will communicate via e-mail to all participant’s parents at that time whether to go forward with the games or to re-schedule to later this month. As always, it is up to the parents whether they allow their child to participate.  The Mount Erie Road Run scheduled for Saturday morning is still occurring; however, more information will be distributed closer to the event. The Parks Departments Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anacortes-Parks-and-Recreation/239788472883324  will be the primary source to keep citizens informed about conditions throughout the weekend.

We encourage everyone to be careful and pay attention to the conditions as they unfold. Be careful not to venture into areas where trees may fall in high winds or waves may come over trails adjacent to the water. Specific areas to be careful of include the Anacortes Community Forest Lands, Washington Park, Tommy Thompson Parkway, and Guemes Channel Trail; however, any area should be assessed carefully and stay clear from downed power lines.

Community members are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages. Have emergency supplies on hand at home and in your vehicle such as extra batteries, flashlights, food, water, and supplies.

There is a greater probability for fallen trees and damage to the electric system because many trees still have leaves on them. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and Comcast is preparing crews to be ready to respond. Power outages should be reported www.pse.com/app or call 1-888- CALL PSE
