The state Transportation Department may be favoring a roundabout for Sharpes Corner.

Washington State DOT staff are asking for community feedback on two proposed plans to reduce collisions and congestion along State Route 20 at Sharpes Corner.

Staff narrowed their options to two alternatives based on previous comments: creating a roundabout or adding a second left turn lane and improving signals at the intersection.

WSDOT will host an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, at Anacortes Middle School, 2202 M Ave., to get input on these two alternatives. The two options were developed based on feedback from about 100 people at a January open house.

“A lot of folks attended the first open house, and everyone agreed that something needed to be done to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection and the nearby area,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Jason Koreski. “Many people were in favor of a roundabout, but we’re also analyzing how effective adding a second left turn lane and adjusting the signals would be.”

Department staff and a stakeholder advisory team will use comments from this event to select a concept by the end of April and then start designing the selected option. A third open house will be held this fall to get feedback on the chosen alternative and its design. Construction is scheduled for 2018.
