An enthusiastic crowd turned out for Anacortes’ annual Christmas parade on Saturday despite the very windy and sometimes rainy morning.
This parade was different for me and it changed my view of the parade. I was in it for the first time ever. In first time I’ve been in any parade, anywhere. I saw all the smiling, happy, cheering adults and their kids who lined up along Commercial Ave. to get into the Christmas spirit.
I usually try to get some good photos of our Christmas parade. But, this year I couldn't get any photos of the parade. Instead, my wife shot a couple for me.
I was one of those guys driving John Deere ride-on lawn mowers for the Anacortes Schools Foundation. I was invited to join the group because I’m on the ASF Board. It was a lot more fun than I had anticipated.
So here’s a chance to plug ASF. We hand out scholarships for graduating high school seniors and college student who have graduated from Anacortes High School. In addition, we have an extensive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) enrichment program in our schools. And, in 2015 we added, thanks to the fine crew at the Shell Refinery here, a Fun Run for school kids.
I might add that the foundation is holding events for school kids this Saturday and Sunday at the port's event center at the foot of Commercial. And, next Saturday night the Anacortes Schools Foundation will hold our major fundraiser, a dinner event. Details at their Web site.
