2015 1127 ship in two

It’s a common dilemma among boat owners – the boat that once seemed just the right size eventually begins to feel a bit too small. What to do? Buy a bigger boat? Well, here’s another option. Just make the boat you have a little bigger.

At 240 ft. long, the at-sea seafood processing boat “Starbound” (foreground in the photo) is not exactly small, but when they needed more room, the ship’s owners decided to have Dakota Creek Industries here in Anacortes make a few modifications – including literally cutting the boat in half to add a new midsection.

Here you can see the gap where a new hull section will be inserted, making the ship about 60 ft. longer.

The work that goes on in this small local shipyard is truly amazing – from maintenance and repair work on ferries and fishing boats, to building new state-of-the-art research vessels.

Next time you’re in town, go down to 3rd Street and take a look at what’s happening in the DCI shipyard. This is truly a “working waterfront”, and there’s always something interesting to see.
