The Facebook for Neighborhoods

In an article on the Web site Next City, Nancy Scola introduces a a social media site Nextdoor, a neighborhood-focused Web site, which includes some neighborhoods here in Anacortes.

Scola says the idea behind the site is simple: “We’ve become acclimated to using Facebook to connect with friends and family. LinkedIn for work. Twitter for our interests. Yet in 2014 there is no go-to online social network for the people we live among. ‘And that,’ [Nextdoor founder Sarah] Leary says while sitting in Nextdoor’s suite of offices, ‘is kind of crazy.’”

The fact is, when I started Anacortes Now, I was looking to create a hyper-local Web site where people here could interact with each other, but that just has not happened. While Nextdoor is a national Web site, it allows creation of private password-protected areas assigned to neighborhoods for residents of those neighborhoods to discuss topics important to them.
