Eagles Secretary David Mooney said this year was the first time in “some 20 years” of donkey basketball here that any kind of protest took place. He said they'll look for a different kind of fund-raiser next year.
The Middle School principal and the School District have received hundreds of phone calls and emails. Some calls came from as far away as Australia and the United Kingdom.
Middle School Principal Pat Harrington said the school is not involved, except to rent out the gym for the game. He said the school is a public space and is obligated to accommodate any organization that wants to use the space. But, he added, "We'll find a way to avoid this" kind controversy in the future.
Meanwhile School District Superintendent Mark Wenzel said the School District and the Eagles have agreed that this year will be the last year for this event, “given the concerns by community members and people from outide the community.
