One returning and three new City Council members also took the oath of office Monday night at the first Council meeting of the year. Gere’s official swearing-in on Dec. 23, making the Monday night event strictly ceremonial for Gere, allowed her to begin handling the city’s business. She moved into the Mayor's office on Jan. 2 and Monday night said she has been busy with City business since then.
Cake was served following the Council’s meeting, which included hearing a report on the new County Jail and voting on a final plat for San Juan Passage, a 99-unit housing development near the state ferry terminal.
