They found unstable avalanche zones and several slides. The largest they got to was below Liberty Bell Mountain - 150' wide by 12' deep.
The determination was made that it wasn't safe to put a crew there to clean up, much less to let anyone drive under those chutes.
For those of you who like statistics - last winter the highway closed on Nov. 20 and reopened this past spring on April 16.
