The pool district went to the city for a Conditional Use permit because the pool is inside R-3 residential zoned land and is not specifically permitted in that area. The Planning Commission is recommending approval. The matter moves to the City Council on Oct. 6.
The new fitness center would be about 1,650 square feet would be north of the current pool building and allow for new equipment and would free up the current fitness space for aerobic fitness and yoga.
The new building would enhance pedestrian access via a larger, safer, level entry plaza from the east parking lot.
The Conditional Use application says that existing off-street parking would not be affected. There are 54 spaces in the lot to the east of the building and 104 spaces in the lot to the west, which is shared with the Senior Activities Center and the Methodist Church.
The adjacent intersection at 22nd St. and J Ave. will be modified with new pedestrian sidewalk cuts to allow safer pedestrian access from Island View Elementary School and the middle school and high school.
