Police get raises in new contract

The officers will see a 2.5-percent hike this year, retroactive to January 1, 2013, then 1.5-percent next January first, followed by a one-percent hike on Sept. 1, 2014. Total cost to the city of the increases is $183,389.

Employees continue to be responsible for a portion of their health insurance premiums. The premium sharing increases over the duration of the contract.

The previous contract expired on Dec. 31, 2012. The city and the Police Services Guild, which represents the officers, have been negotiating since last summer. This past spring, a mediator assisted, but still no agreement was reached, according to a memo by city Human Resources director Emily Schuh.

Schuh said, "Another meeting was scheduled in July without the presence of a mediator in which we were able to come to agreement on a proposal to recommend to our constituents."

The new contract expires at the end of 2014.
