The Sixth St. project had been scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day, but Project Manager Steve Lange said the contract ran into unexpected drainage problems, which the city opted to fix now rather than hold off until later.
Lange said the Sixth St. project should be completed within a week or so.
The work, which is funded by a federal ARRA grant, includes the construction of new curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm drainage, and pavement between I Avenue and K Avenue, and new 10 foot sidewalk on the south side of the street between K Avenue and O Avenue.
The project is costing $478,000, significantly less than the federal stimulus grant of $700,000, forcing the city to return $220,000 to the federal government for use on other stimulus projects.
The project is being undertaken in conjunction with work being done at the Guemes ferry terminal.
