Race director Kristen Koci told Anacortes Now, "I used to run the trestle all the time. I thought it would be a good opportunity people to do what they used to do" before the fire.
The fast runners lined up first for the 5k (3.1 miles) and 10k (6.2 miles) race. The 6k route took runners from the Fidalgo Bay RV Resort starting point to the turnaround at Cap Sante Marina on the Tommy Thompson Parkway, then back through the RV Resort to the trestle, then back to the RV Resort for the finish.
Meanwhile, a few minutes after the runners started, walkers, including many children, walked from the RV Resort out to the trestle and back for a 2k walk.
Nearly $300,000 has been pledged or contributed to the fund to pay for the trestle repair, which is nearing its final phase. The wood decking is expected to start being laid on Wednesday.
