Tesoro Senior Vice-President Lynn Westfall said, in an email to reporters, "It is with the deepest sadness that we must report the loss of our friend and co worker, Lew Janz, who passed away this morning due to the injuries he sustained in the incident at the Anacortes refinery. Please remember his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."
Janz and fellow employee 34-year-old Matt Gumbel, last reported in serious condition, were both fighting off infections. Both were scheduled for surgeries in the coming days.
All 7 Tesoro employees killed or injured in the refinery fire were badly burned. Three died at the scene, 3 others in the aftermath, leaving Gumbel the sole survivor.
Tesoro announced Monday that it would shut down the refinery until repairs are completed or an alternative process can be developed. The fire crippled their ability to turn out refined fuels.
