The America's Cup trophy, shown here during a reception in San Diego earlier this week, will be brought to Anacortes for a visit, probably in early April, according to Mayor Dean Maxwell. The winning boat, build here by BMW Oracle Racing, won the cup in races off Valencia, Spain earlier this month.

Maxwell says he's working with Cord Builders, the Chamber of Commerce and EDASC, The Economic Development Agency of Skagit Council, for some kind of public event, probably on April 10. But, he stressed the date could change as plans aren't locked up yet.

Maxwell said "This is big history for Anacortes. A lot of people will want to see the Cup," a tall silver trophy. The America's Cup returned to the United States for the first time since 1995 after this month's race in Spain.

The trophy arrived in San Francisco, where the boat's club, the Golden Gate Yacht Club, is based, then to San Diego, where BMW Oracle Racing berths the boat. The club and BMW Oracle have indicated the trophy will be taken on a tour.

The 90 foot trimaran which won the America's Cup races this month, was actually the third boat built in Anacortes for BMW Oracle.
