Mayoral candidates spending less than 4 years ago

Four years ago, when Kevin McKeown challenged Maxwell, McKeown spent about $19,500 and Maxwell spent nearly $22,000.

This year’s expenses have been much less. Maxwell has reported raising $12,815.88 and spending $6,667.10, compared with Sonnenberg, who reports having raised $9,340.86 and having spent $8,016.51 in their latest campaign reports filed with the Public Disclosure Commission.

Maxwell is running on his 16 years in office and his list of campaign contributors reflects that. He has reported contributions of $500, the highest amounts received, from Tesoro; Susan Krienen, the General Manager of the Shell Refinery; Skagit Island Builders PAC; and Duane Clark, owner of Cap Sante Retirement Community. Maxwell lists 91 contributors, with 3 City Council members on the list.

Meanwhile, Sonnenberg, a relative newcomer, has just one contributor of $500, Barton Waring, listed as retired. Sonnenberg lists 35 contributors.
