There's a new mail drop box behind the library, so now you can return borrowed books and drop off mail in one swoop. And, on election day, you can drop your ballots there, too.
The city and the Postal Service reached an agreement to place a drive-up drop box at the library for lack of any better spot closer to the post office.
A little background here: The Post Office removed the drop box that had been in the parking lot behind the Post Office because of a series of close calls and minor traffic incidents raised concerns. One postal vehicle was damaged in a minor accident.
So, they moved it to Fifth St., but drivers were approaching it driving the wrong way. Postmaster Ken Perry said he received a threat of a lawsuit from someone who felt the Fifth St. location was a safety threat.
Meanwhile, a search turned up no good locations near the Post Office that would allow a driver to drop off mail. The City Hall lot was considered and rejected because of traffic concerns.
So, the library is it. And, there's another drop box in the Safeway parking lot.
