Tight school district budget okayed

The Anacortes School District expects 116 fewer students this year and officials are planning for a total of 2,544 students for the year. School Superintendent Chris Borgen told the board "We had a surprise last year" when 136 students dropped off the enrollment list.

Even with the smaller budget for the coming school year, Borgen said only one teacher will apparently be without a job this year. While the district laid off a dozen teachers, the rest have either obtained jobs or will be back with Anacortes this coming year.

The district has decided leave 4.5 positions unfilled until enrollment is better known at the start of classes.
