School zones to get traffic warning lights

The City Council Monday night approved the purchase, which is being funded by a Traffic Safety Grant.

The new solar-powered flashing school zone lights are destined for the school zones around Mt. Erie, Island View and Whitney elementary schools. The lights will flash during the times marked on the current school zone signs: Mon-Fri, 7am-4pm.

Each of the lights is programmable via wireless connection. These are same kind of lights that Skagit County installed near Fidalgo Elementary School. The city expects to have the flashing lights installed and operating by the time classes resume.
