There are 3 positions up for election on the South Fidalgo Community Council, which represents the unincorporated areas of Fidalgo Island. The Council is looking for candidates who are interested in playing a vital role in fostering community and preserving the character of South Fidalgo.
The focus of the South Fidalgo Community Council's initial work since its founding in 2007 has involved developing a plan of work for the newly formed organization and beginning to develop a Sub-area Plan for South Fidalgo.
Other activities include working with the state Transportation Department on the upgrade to Highway 20 across South Fidalgo; representing South Fidalgo concerns at numerous county committee meetings and hearings; and hosting speakers on topics of interest to the area. Much work remains to be done on environmental studies and providing opportunities to develop a greater sense of community.
The council is hosting a community dinner at the Dewey Beach Fire Hall at 6pm, Wednesday, July 22, to discuss its work, solicit ideas, and answer questions. Everyone is welcome. Donations gratefully accepted.
Candidates must be registered to vote (by the time of the election) in one of three precincts - Fidalgo, Dewey Beach, or Rosario.
Mail-in ballots will be due October 2009. Candidates will be elected for a term of four years, joining four remaining council members, whose terms will expire in 2011.
Candidate declaration of candidacy forms are available on the Council's Web site. Completed forms should be mailed to South Fidalgo Community Council, postmarked no later than July 31, 2009. Questions may be addressed to council chair, Tom Carson at 360-293-8557 or via the Council's Web site.
The council, which was established in 2007, set the terms of office to be staggered. Initially, four members were elected to four-year terms and three members to two-year terms. Members elected in October will serve full 4-year terms. Remaining on the council are chair Tom Carson, Robert Atterberry, David Pearson, and Cyndi Walters. Council members with two-year terms are: Harold Harrington, Jan Hersey, and Leigh Sawyer.
