Bald eagle killed after hitting windshield

The officer, Rob Leetz, was driving to Mount Vernon Thursday evening when the bird flew to the highway median, then spread it’s wings and flew over the road and right into his windshield.

Leetz told a reporter for the Skagit Valley Herald “I saw it and knew it was going to hit my car. It was just a matter of what to do.” But, about all he could do was hit his brakes, but it was just too late. The windshield shattered and the pieces, as well as bird feathers flew into the car.

No one was injured, but the bird was killed. His car had to be towed. Police Captain John Small said it would cost about $400 to replace the windshield.
