The garden is a project of the City Parks & Recreation Dept. and Beat the Heat.
The 29th Street Community Garden is an experiment in converting lawn to a food garden, using two methods to prepare the soil: One section is being lightly tilled twice and amended with organic materials, compost, and straw. The other, no-till section preserves the original microbial soil layers, decomposing the lawn under layers of cardboard and soil amendments topped with a thick layer of soil, compost, and weed-suppressing straw.
All the available spaces have already been reserved. There is a waiting list. Get more information at the Community Garden area of the city's Web site.
