Free ride for most incumbents

election2009.pngThere will be no opposition for a large number of local candidates for this fall's election, including incumbents at the City Council, School Board, Pool District and Hospital District. But, all 3 Port Commissioners who are up for re-election have opponents.

Mayor Dean Maxwell is being challenged by Steve Sonnenberg, a former Chicago lawyer who moved here around 2 years ago. Sonennberg has a lawsuit pending against the city over a Skyline development. Maxwell has been in office nearly 16 years.

All 4 City Council members and both School Board members who are up for re-election are not being challenged in this year’s election. And, Mayor Dean Maxwell will face one opponent, Skyline resident Steve Sonnenberg.

Friday was the filing deadline for this year’s elections and City Council members Brian Geer, Cynthia Richardson, Bill Turner and Erica Pickett will automatically be elected because of no opposition. Board of Education Board members MItch Everton and Kris Lytton also face no opposition, assuring their continued positions on the School Board

But, all 3 incumbents on the Port of Anacortes Port Commission face opponents. Ray Niver will face Roger Born, Bill Short will face John Prosser and J Michael McAdams, and Keith Rubin is being challenged by Guy Davidson.

None of the Commissioners in the Pool District nor the Hospital District will have opposition. The Port races will go to a primary on Aug. 18. General Election is Nov. 3.
