The School Board meets Tuesday evening to listen to the recommendation of School Superintendent Chris Borgen on just how many teachers and staffers must be cut to make up for a $3 million cut in next year’s school budget.
Borgen told the School Board last week that the budget cut is necessary because of a projected loss in enrollment of as many as 120 students next year, as well as cuts in the amount of support coming from the state and federal governments.
While next year’s school budget won’t be finalized until close to the start of classes, the school district faces a May 15 deadline to notify teachers of layoffs. Borgen said he had met with around 60 teachers and staff to describe the situation. At least one administration official has already received a job offer elsewhere.
The School Board meets at 6:15 pm Tuesday in their Board room at the Anacortes Middle School.
