Star Bar closes its doors

The restaurant, located at 416 1/2 Commercial Ave., closed on Saturday without explanation or advance notice.

The notice continued, "We thank you for your patronage over the past four year and look forward to seeing you in the future." The phone number on the notice was not in service when we tried it on Monday.

The Skagit Valley Herald says the restaurant is for sale.

GEMS, the company which owns Star Bar, also has plans for a marina, hotel & restaurant on the Guemes Channel a short distance west of downtown Anacortes. The latest round of plans is under review by the state Department of Natural Resources. The first set of plans was rejected by DNR.

GEMS plans to take down an old red cannery building on the pier. They also plan public access along the waterfront, as well as a parking lot at the corner of 12th St. and D Ave, in addition to on-pier parking.

The proposal for the parking lot, on D Ave. has caused a stir in Old Town and has prompted the appearance of numerous signs protesting the lot. A group called SaveOur Neighborhoods says the project doesn’t fit in the residential area that surrounds it.

GEMS bought the old cannery building and paid more than $1 million for the aquatic lands lease. But, DNR owns the over-water property on behalf of the state.
