Borgen praised Simensen as having high intelligence, high energy and compassion. He said Simensen has, in his 9 years teaching band, made something good out of what he said was a "teetering band program." Borgen alluded to Professor Harold Hill in the Broadway show "The Music Man," and said Simensen isn't scamming the town like Hill did.
"A lot of people make the band program go 'round," Simensen answered.
The Anacortes School District band program continues to grow under his leadership. His dedication to music and the program has helped to dramatically increase participation across grade levels.
