Arts Commission selects work for roundabout

aerie.jpgThe Anacortes Arts Commission is recommending an 18-foot stainless steel sculpture, shown in this artist's rendering, for the roundabout that Commission chair Rita James said "is really going to make a statement."

Artist Merrilee Moore calls her work "Aerie" and had told the selection jury it "represents a nice, comfortable nest." The work will cost $30,000, mostly being paid for by donations. It will be her first major piece of art.

The Arts Commission liked the low cost, the projected low maintenance and that the work won't interrupt sight lines at the roundabout. City Council member Cynthia Richardson, a member of the selection jury, said, "The scale was something we liked. The others were more appropriate for a park setting."

The Arts Commission's recommendation will now go to the City Council for final approval, which may come as early as Dec. 6. James said she expects the sculpture to be installed by late spring or early summer, 2011.
