The federal government has awarded the Port of Anacortes more than $575,000 to improve security at the port's Pier 2 Marine Terminal. The money will be used for camera surveillance, lighting, gate improvements, a security guard house and patrol vehicles.
There were a few DUI arrests over Oyster Run weekend, but one of the more interesting ones involved 11 people riding in one vehicle, including 8 in the truck bed. And, the driver was underage.
Two recent films make it to Anacortes this week: Love Happens and District 9. A routine romance and a si-fi epic shot in South Africa. District 9 has won some rave reviews. Not the same story for Love Happens, though.
Supporters of an effort to save Guemes Mountain have met an Oct. 1 deadline to raise enough money to purchase 70 acres of the top of the mountain from Panoramic View Enterprises. The have raised $2.2 million for the purchase.
The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a number of events this election
season, including a candidates forum and a mayoral debate.
Police Chief Bonnie Bowers estimates there were at least 6,000 motorcycles on the streets here for the Oyster Run last weekend. She briefed the City Council Monday night on the event.
