Tall ships ready for battle

The tall ship Lady Washington heads out of Cap Sante Marina Saturday afternoon on what they call a 'Battle Sail,' a 3 hour recreation of a typical 18th century naval skirmish. The Hawaiian Chieftain, another tall ship, followed the Lady Washington out to Fidalgo Bay. 

New arch at the trestle

A bicyclist goes under the newly-installed arch at the west end of the trestle on the Tommy Thompson Parkway Friday. The Asian-style arch, by nationally-recognized artist Ries Niemi of Edison, spells out 'we' in 8 languages across the top.

About 4-dozen people were on hand for Tuesday night’s candidates forum at City Hall, on the eve of mailing of ballots for the August 17 primary election. Participating candidates included 3 running for county assessor and 9 candidates and a surrogate for the state legislature.

Tall ships coming to Anacortes

The brig Lady Washington and the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain, have scheduled a visit to Anacortes starting Friday. There will be opportunities to tour the vessels and participate as guests on public sailings, including a new value-priced sail in the evening of Monday,  Aug. 2.

Two bronze sculptures valued at $5,000 were taken from a boat in dry dock in the 700 block of 30th St.  In addition to the sculptures, two 15-inch plasma televisions, and 2 pair of binoculars were taken.  The owner was last on the boat on July 18th.

The City Council Wednesday night unanimously turned back a proposal to build a 13-home planned development in Skyline. The major problem was a requirement for a 50-foot buffer for a stream named Anaco Bourn.
