Ian and Joy Sloan took the opportunity that was presented by a sunny Thursday afternoon to go out sailing for a couple of hours after work. They're launching their F-18, 18-foot catamaran, Joyride, at Seafarers Memorial Park. This weekend, they'll be competing in races at Shilshole Marina in Seattle. They own Anacortes Rigging and Yacht Services.

The three County Commissioners heard from dozens of people Tuesday night on whether a proposal from the city of Anacortes for an expansion of its Urban Growth Area should be docketed for a full review by the county.

The State Department of Health has temporarily closed Samish Bay for commercial and recreational shellfish harvesting due to high levels of fecal coliform bacteria entering the bay from the Samish River.
