The City Council Monday night okayed a ban on so-called "sky lanterns," with a fine of up to $250 for anyone lighting or releasing one inside the city limits.

Lighter snowfall this past winter helped crews reopen the North Cascades Highway Tuesday, almost a month earlier than last year. This view of the snow clearing was taken on April 8 near Whistler Mountain.

Transition Fidalgo & Friends will host Ocean on the Edge at Seafarer’s Memorial Park this Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in an effort to raise awareness about the impact of global warming in our region and to inspire individuals to take action.

The Washington State Department of Health will reopen Samish Bay shellfish beds effective Wednesday, April 17, at 8:00 a.m.  The Department of Health closed the beds on April 13 due to the 100+ cubic feet per second rise in the river level and anticipated fecal coliform bacteria levels. 

A Friday Harbor man without medical insurance reported he was hit by a truck on Commercial Ave. mid-morning on Thursday and wanted to report the incident, even though the driver stopped because he wanted “crime victim compensation” to cover his medical expenses.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has had two 125-foot derelict vessels removed from a dilapidated dock on the Guemes Channel. The two vessels are being transported by Global Diving and Salvage to safer moorage at the Port of Seattle.
