Charlie’s, a West End staple since the ‘60’s, is closing tonight. Chalie's is the last restaurant open at that end of Fidalgo Island.

Charlie’s is the second restaurant in the West End to close recently. Flounder Bay Cafe in Skyline, closed a month ago.

The closure could be for just the winter, or for good, depending on how the economy looks in the spring. Co-owner Dee Davey says “We’re not really sure at this point.”

Blaming the slowing economy, Davey said “The first thing people cut is dining out.”

The restaurant was started in the ’60’s by Charlie and Joanne Funk, who transformed a burger stand called the Sandpiper into Charlie’s. Dee and Brent Davey bought it in 1979.

Charlie’s will close their doors Friday night.
