The Coast Guard assisted in the rescue of one person after his vessel began taking on water near Guemes Island Wednesday evening.

Anacortes firefighters, with help from a tug, doused a small wildland grass fire in a difficult-to-reach location on the south side of Cap Sante Tuesday evening.

The County Commissioners have voted to move ahead with a request from Anacortes to expand the city's urban growth area, including property that Tethys Enterprises has indicated could hold a planned one-million-square-foot bottling plant.

Anacortes Police received 22 complaints of fireworks violations in the first 5 days of July. That is fewer than in previous years. However, officers still located several subjects who claimed they were unaware of the citywide ban.

The Board of County Commissioners will hold a public meeting to discuss and possibly decide on the docketing of 2012 petitions to amend the Skagit County Comprehensive Plan, including a proposal from Anacortes to change the city's urban growth area.

System-side proposed ferry fare increases would mean higher fares for both passengers and vehicles between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, with a 4.1-percent hike proposed for the Anacortes-Sydney, B.C. route.
