You don't often get a chance to see Commercial Ave. in downtown Anacortes without any cars. But, Sunday, the street was open for bikers and pedestrians as part of the city's first Open Streets event.

A parade of antique machinery included a hop-on ride popular with the kids during the 19th annual Antique Engine & Machinery Show on Saturday.

Police who responded to a report of a vehicle that spun out and raced away from Sharpes Corner located the vehicle later in town with a shredded front tire and heavy damage to the front and rear. The driver a minor faces DUI and hit-and-run charges.

Six state and local conservation groups have filed an appeal of Skagit County’s decision that could allow a proposed Shell Puget Sound Refinery crude-by-rail facility at March Point to move forward without requiring a full environmental review.

The City Council is considering moving the Council’s regular evening meetings into the dinner hour. The Cuncil has twice talked about moving the 7pm meeting start time to 6:30 and the matter is again on the Council agenda for next Monday night’s meeting.

The City Council has approved a $600,000 contract to build another section of the Guemes Channel Trail, which will ultimately connect the state ferry landing with downtown Anacortes and the Tommy Thompson Trail.
