Anacortes School Board President Kris Lytton, a Democrat, appears to have the early lead in the race for the 40th Legislative District, Position 1, race to replace Dave Quall, who decided not to seek re-election. Lytton said she's gratified and thankful for all her supporters.

As expected, the City Council has rescinded an illegal utility tax exemption for 14 agencies in Anacortes that the city had not been collecting since 1993. The city may have to pay nearly $50,000 to the state in uncollected taxes.

The City Council Monday night finalized rejection of a planned 13-unit housing project called Hidden Shores in Skyline by approving a formal Findings of Fact. One Council member made it clear, however, that the owners could make other proposals for that property.

Sunday was another good day to head to the beach, such as this one at Washington Park. Burlington Airport recorded a high of 87 on Sunday and 84 on Saturday. More heat ahead.

Anacortes Police arrested a man who had drug paraphernalia visible in his pocket when he flagged down a police officer to ask a question. The man also had 33 grams of marijuana.

We were told there'd be pirates at the Latitudes & Attitudes cruise party at Cap Sante Marina this weekend, but we didn't suspect they'd look so dangerous. In addition to these 'pirates,' there was live music all afternoon Saturday. The partying continues Sunday. (Richard Grosvenor photo)
