Mayor sees city finances improving

Mayor Dean Maxwell highlighted the city's finances during his annual state of the city speech to a lunch meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, saying the city is seeing "a few sprouts of green."

Ground broken for new Guemes terminal

Ground was officially broken Wednesday for a new Anacortes ferry terminal building at the Guemes Ferry landing. The new two-story building will be built about 10 feet to the south of the current building.

School levy passes

2010-0209_levy_passes.jpgAnacortes School Board President Kris Lytton said she is very grateful to Anacortes voters for approving a 4-year maintenance and operations levy for the Anacortes school system. Early results show 76 percent of the voters approved the levy request.

No race on first day of America's Cup

The BMW-Oracle boat USA and the Swiss boat Alinghi waited for enough wind today to start the America's Cup, but after nearly 4 hours today's match was called off.

Anacortes-built boat ready to race

The Anacortes-built trimaran from BMW-Oracle Racing is ready for the America's Cup races, which start overnight Sunday night, local time, according to the team. Anacortes Now will broadcast the races live, courtesy of BMW-Oracle Racing.

Police cited a woman for hit-and-run, driving without a license, having no insurance and leaving a child unattended in a parked running vehicle after the child put the car into gear and hitting another vehicle.

Two new films open here this weekend, but neither has been receiving great reviews. The  musical Nine and the romantic Dear John both are getting mixed reviews. One holdover, however, has received better reviews and it's Up in the Air, with George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.

High School vandalized by burglars

Burglars broke into Anacortes High School very early last Saturday morning and vandalized several doors after they disabled the alarm system and video cameras. Police released this video.
