Seventh Tesoro fire victim dies

2010-0424_tesoro_victim_death.jpgThe seventh and last victim of the Tesoro refinery fire died early Saturday morning, according to a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center, where he was being treated for burns. Matt Gumbel had undergone skin graft surgery just a few hours earlier, but doctors could not stabilize his vital signs.

Trestle Fund Run attracts runners

More than 100 runners braved the cold wind Saturday morning in the final fund-raising event to pay for the repair of the Tommy Thompson trestle crossing Fidalgo Bay. A large section of the trestle was damaged by a fire of unknown origin last October.

Teachers may not be cut with new school budget

Anacortes School Superintendent Chris Borgen says the school district may not have to lay off teachers, despite cuts in the state budget and a dropping enrollment here.

Repairs to the Tommy Thompson trestle across Fidalgo Bay  are nearing the final phase. City Parks Director Gary Robinson told the City Council Monday night that he hopes that repair work will be done by mid-May.

Noon Kiwanis celebrate

Despite 100 inches of new snow that has fallen since the effort to reopen the North Cascades Highway began 3-1/2 weeks ago, WSDOT maintenance crews opened the gates on SR 20 to traffic at noon on Friday. 

Tea Party tax protest draws few supporters
