Farmers Market opens Saturday

Opening Day for the Anacortes Farmers Market is Saturday, bringing sunshine, good friends, fresh produce, specialty foods and shiny, happy handcrafts to the area next to the Depot Arts Center.

Trestle Fund goes over the top!

The sign on Commercial Ave. says it all: the city and the parks foundation have gone over the top. They have over $325,000 pledged for the repair of the Tommy Thompson Parkway trestle that was damaged by a fire.

City: Nesting falcons have moved

The city Parks and Recreation Department is asking climbers and hikers to stay out of the Skyline Arête area of Mount Erie because nesting peregrine falcons have moved in. Jonn Lunsford released a map showing the area to avoid.

Oil spill response drill conducted

The two refineries on March Point participated in an oil spill response drill on Monday that was conducted by the state Department of Ecology, in association with a private, non-profit contractor, Marine Spill Response Corp. 

Rail Links to Anacortes

The old railroad bed that linked March Point to downtown Anacortes, now paved, was a vital link to the dozens of industrial facilities that lined Fidalgo Bay in the last century.

A 14-year-old girl who had taken the wrong bus and was walking back home in the area of Oakes Avenue and Sunset reported Wednesday, May 5, that she was approached by a suspicious man in a car who repeatedly asked her to get into his car. 

Trestle repair work nears completion

Strandberg Construction workers continue top place new wood decking in place on the Tommy Thompson parkway trestle across Fidalgo Bay. The work may not be done until the end of May, a little later than originally hoped.

Historic ships make short stop here

An OARS rowing crew practices Tuesday morning with two historic ships, Lady Washington (left) and Hawaiian Chieftain in the background, at Cap Sante Marina. The tall ships were open Monday for brief tours. Both have already sailed off for Bellingham, but, they'll be back in July.

Anacortes Mill Row

This scene was dramatically different in the early 1900s, when this historic photo was taken from Cap Sante. Spreading across the west side of Fidalgo Bay, Mill Row consisted of numerous wood processing facilities, attesting to the importance of the lumber industry to Anacortes in the last century.
