State gives Huckleberry Is. to Samish

The state has agreed to transfer ownership of Huckleberry Island, just east of Guemes island, to the Samish Island Nation. The state Parks and Recreation Commission approved the transfer this week.

These warm summer days help our fruits and veggies grow and we are all so ready for this season to get going.  Strawberries are officially here and we had our first appearance of cherries (the beginnings of the beautiful fruit from east of the Cascades).

Samish Healing Pole ceremony Saturday

The Samish Indian Nation will raise this healing pole, now resting in a shed, during a ceremony the Fidalgo Bay RV Park. The pole was originally intended as a healing pole after the trestle fire last October.

Chief Bowers returns from FBI Academy

Bonnie BowersPolice chief Bonnie Bowers is back on the job this week after graduating from the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia last week. It was a rare opportunity for Bowers, who said she carried a heavy 18-credit load.

Shouting match at City Council

A rare shouting match broke out at City Council Monday night, as Mayor Dean Maxwell tried to quiet Council member Nick Petrish. The issue: whether the City Council should consider passing some duties off to a hearing examiner.

Trestle celebration

Many of the people celebrating the completion of repairs to the Tommy Thompson Parkway trestle across Fidalgo Bay gathered for a group photo just prior to the official re-opening of the trestle on Thursday. The trestle was re-opened after repairs were completed in May. View The Big Picture.

Community turns out for trestle celebration

With some help from school kids, Mayor Dean Maxwell cut a ribbon officially re-opening the Tommy Thompson Parkway trestle across Fidalgo Bay. Dozens of Anacortes residents showed up Thursday evening for the official celebration.

AHS seniors graduate & make plans

Hannah Smythe gives thumbs up to her classmate after "turning the tassel" on her graduation cap Wednesday night at Anacortes High School's graduation ceremony. A substantial number of graduates are planning on attending a 4-year college.
