The Police Blotter

A 59-year-old Anacortes man was injured when he narrowly missed hitting a deer on D Avenue on Friday. He apparently swerved to avoid the deer that had crossed the road in front of him.

The motorcycle toppled onto its side and slid approximately 30 yards. The rider was taken to the local hospital for a possible broken leg, broken ribs, and multiple lacerations. The deer ran off apparently unharmed.

September 5

A resident of the 800 block of 29th Street reported that her bank had informed her that someone had been using her ATM card to access her bank account and had withdrawn over $3,000 in unauthorized transactions.  The victim believed her 15-year-old son was the most likely suspect and that he had stolen her ATM card.  The boy was currently a signed juvenile runaway and his whereabouts were unknown.  The matter is under investigation. 

A 62-year-old Salt Lake City, Utah man was arrested at the Washington State Ferry terminal at the request of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.  The man had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for a previous manufacturing of a controlled substance charge out of San Juan County.  The man was booked into jail on the warrant.

A married couple from Battle Ground that arrived in Anacortes to celebrate their wedding anniversary three hours earlier got into an argument at a residence in the 1800 block of Skyline Way.  Both parties were intoxicated and it was learned that they had bickering with each other all day.  The woman went to a motel for the night while the man stayed with a relative for a cooling off period.  No crime was committed. 

A man and his sister-in-law argued at a residence in the 4100 block of Kingsway after the woman became upset because her brother-in-law had hired a former boyfriend of hers.  The woman left the residence when the man informed her he was calling the police.  No crime occurred, but the man wanted the incident documented in case the woman returned uninvited. 

September 6

An officer stopped a car on Oakes Avenue near Florida after observing the car weaving across the center line and speeding.  The driver was identified as a 27-year-old Anacortes man who smelled of intoxicants and said that he had “two beers.”  The man displayed other signs of drinking and he performed poorly on field sobriety tests.  He also provided a portable breath test that was over three times the legal limit.  He was arrested for drunk driving but later refused to take the breath test at the police station.  He was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult. 

An officer observed a car traveling approximately 5 to 10 miles per hour and weaving in it’s lane of travel on J Avenue and then onto 29th Street.  The car crossed the center line at least twice and the officer stopped the car on M Avenue.  The driver, a 44-year-old Anacortes woman, smelled of intoxicants, had watery, bloodshot eyes, and said she had drunk two glasses of wine.  She claimed that she had been looking for her dog.  The woman performed poorly on filed sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  The officer found empty beer bottles in the car and a mason jar on the front seat containing a liquid that smelled like alcohol.  The woman was processed for DUI and provided two breath samples that were over twice the legal limit.  She was cited for DUI and released. 

A 54-year-old Olympia man riding a motorcycle eastbound on State Route 20 braked for the yellow light at Sharpes Corner causing his motorcycle to fishtail, skid, and then go into a slide.  No other vehicles were involved and the driver was transported to the local emergency room where he was treated for possible shoulder and rib injuries. 

A woman residing in the 3800 block of M Avenue reported that her 17-year-old son had punched a hole in the front door and damaged the door frame after he had been locked out of the house for allegedly pushing her.  The boy had left prior to the officer’s arrival and possible charges of domestic violence assault and malicious mischief are pending. 

A 26-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for investigation of felony malicious mischief after he allegedly threw his bicycle through the window of a car parked at a motel in the 2900 block of Commercial Avenue.  The victim, a 54-year-old Colfax man, told officers that he had just arrived at the motel when the intoxicated suspect accused him of taking his room key.  The victim did not know the suspect and asked him to leave him alone.  A short time later, the victim heard a crash and saw the suspect going back into an adjacent motel room.  The victim then discovered a bicycle had been thrown through the rear window of his rental car and the rear quarter panel was also dented and scratched.  The bike was confirmed to belong to the suspect and he was arrested and booked into jail.  Formal charges are pending.           

September 7

Officers responded to what was initially reported as a “fight” at a motel cabin in the 5300 block of Ferry Terminal Road.  Officers heard loud music and found numerous empty beer cans and a pool of vomit near the cabin.  Officers spoke with several people as they exited the cabin and learned that an underage drinking party had been in progress for the reason of having a birthday celebration for a 16-year-old Anacortes girl.  Ten individuals from Anacortes ranging in age from 15 to 20 showed the signs of drinking alcohol and were detained and charged with underage drinking.  The juveniles were released to their parents. 

A 52-year-old Anacortes man was arrested for domestic violence assault after his live in girlfriend reported that he had pushed her at their residence in the 4200 block of Oakes Avenue.  The woman reported that the power had gone out at the house and that when she went to check the breaker box, her boyfriend grabbed her and pushed her away from the box.  The man admitted to pushing the woman away from the breaker box after he told her to leave it alone.  The man was booked into jail on the assault charge.          

Officers responded to the report of a physical domestic at a house in the 1100 block of 35th Street.  A man reported that he had been arguing with his 49-year-old wife about her son (his step-son) living with them.  The man said that during the argument his wife had slapped him and pushed past him which was consistent with the man having visible redness.  His wife had fled prior to officer arrival, but she returned home a couple of hours later and confirmed her husband’s account of the incident.  She was placed under arrest for domestic violence assault and booked into jail.   

September 8

An Anacortes man and his 14-year-old son went to the police station and turned over a small amount of marijuana that reportedly had been left at their house by a friend of the boy.  As ownership of the marijuana could not be verified, an officer counseled the boy at the father’s request. 

Officers responded to the 5000 block of Kingsway regarding the report of a man shooting a gun into the ground.  Officers contacted a 73-year-old man at his residence and learned that he had fired one round from his shotgun into the ground for the purpose of killing a mole that had been ruining his front lawn.  The man was educated on the ordinance that prohibited the discharge of firearms within the City, and the case was referred to the City Prosecutor for possible criminal charges. 

September 9

A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was contacted at his residence in the 800 block of 29th Street after his family reported he had returned home after running away.  The boy had an outstanding warrant for his arrest stemming from missing a juvenile at risk hearing and he was booked into Juvenile Detention on the warrant. 

An Anacortes woman reported her dog missing from her home in the 100 block of 27th Street the previous week.  The dog owner’s friend provided her with information that another Anacortes woman had found the dog and kept it, and other witnesses reported that the other woman had been seen with the dog.  An officer left a message for the dog finder to contact him, but the woman has not called back and she reportedly got mad at another witness for giving the police her phone number.  Witnesses were advised to inform the dog finder to return the dog or face possible theft charges.  Investigation continues. 

Staff at a youth activity center in the 2400 block of J Avenue reported finding broken glass in the sand of a newly built volleyball court.  The glass appeared to have been intentionally imbedded in the sand with the sharp side up.  The glass apparently came from a window on a shed on the property that was discovered to be broken.  A business was hired to screen the sand for broken glass at an unknown cost. 

An Anacortes man reported the theft of a car stereo and speakers valued at approximately $700 from a car that was parked behind a garage in the 800 block of 31st Street.  The car was left unlocked as it was in the process of being repaired.      

A 45-year-old Anacortes man was booked into jail for assault after he allegedly punched his roommate in the face at their residence in the 5700 block of Sheila Ann Court.  The arrestee had been confronted by his three roommates about drinking alcohol in the house as it violated house rules they had all previously agreed on.  The arrestee reportedly bumped chests with his roommate before punching him.  The roommate suffered a bloody nose and black eye. 

A witness reported seeing a white-colored dump truck pulling a flat bed trailer carrying a tanker truck strike the southbound traffic light at 12th Street and Commercial Avenue.  One traffic signal was broken off and hanging by its’ wires.  The truck continued without stopping and no license was obtained.  Damage to the stop light was estimated at $500. 

A woman was visiting her male friend at his residence in the 1100 block of 11th Street when her former boyfriend, a 49-year-old Anacortes man, arrived and pounded on the door.  The man allegedly walked into the apartment when the door opened and hit the male friend several times.  Officers checked the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him.  The suspect was later issued a summons for court on the assault charge. 

Officers contacted a 26-year-old Tacoma woman at the hospital after staff members became suspicious that she was trying to fraudulently obtain prescription medication.  The woman told officers she was homeless but that she had not been trying to falsely obtain medication although she admitted to doing that at other locations.  The woman had a warrant for her arrest out of King County for a previous theft charges and she was placed under arrest.  A search of her backpack revealed prescription forms and medical discharge paperwork from a variety of locations in Washington using different names.  She was booked into jail on the warrant.

September 10

A 20-year-old Anacortes man reported that he believed his 14-year-old brother had taken his car without permission from their home in the 5600 block of Sugarloaf.  A spare key to the car was missing from the house and the car’s odometer showed additional miles.  An officer contacted the boy who admitted he had stolen the key and taken the car for a drive.  Possible charges of motor vehicle theft are pending against the boy. 

An officer stopped a vehicle in the 800 block of 24th Street after watching it strike the curb and drive onto the sidewalk when it turned from R Avenue.  The driver was identified as a 23-year-old Anacortes woman who said that she aware that she had struck the curb and that she had drank “two beers.”  The driver agreed to submit to field sobriety tests on which she performed poorly.  She was placed under arrest for drunk driving.  At the police station she admitted to drinking “four beers” and that she was “buzzing” but that she didn’t think she was drunk. She provided two breath samples that were over twice the legal limit.  She was cited for DUI and released to a sober adult. 

A resident of the 1500 block of 9th Street reported that an unknown intoxicated female was in his yard and had tried to get into his house.  Officers contacted a 21-year-old Stanwood woman who was staggering up the sidewalk.  The woman was incoherent and could not remember her address or the address of her friend’s house she claimed she was trying to locate.  The woman began to walk away before she collapsed onto a couch that was outside near the sidewalk.  It was determined that due to her high level of alcohol consumption the woman was unfit to care for herself.  She was taken to the local emergency room for treatment and observation. 

September 11

A 33-year-old Sedro-Woolley man who had drinking at a friend’s house in the 3600 block of W. 5th Street finally passed out on the lawn in the middle of the night.  The friend’s reported that the man’s behavior had been getting increasingly aggressive and erratic as the night progressed and that they decided against waking him up due to his behavior.  The man later awoke and began kicking and pounding on the doors to get back inside and he broke the window on the back door.  The man was cited for malicious mischief and booked into jail as it was discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Snohomish County for domestic violence harassment. 

An Anacortes woman received a phone call from an unknown caller she believed was in Africa asking her to send him $250.  In return the caller said that the woman would receive $2 million.  The woman hung up on the man without giving him any money or information. 

A motorcycle driven by a 50-year-old Anacortes man rear ended a car driven by a 46-year-old Anacortes woman after the car had stopped for traffic in the 4200 block of A Avenue.  The motorcycle driver admitted that he had been following too closely and not paying attention.  He was issued an infraction notice and transported to the local hospital for possible knee and ankle injuries.
