There was what looks like a higher-than-usual number of reports of car prowls, package thefts and mail thefts during this Christmas week.

A man attempted to steal about $550 worth of alcohol from a grocery store around 11:15 a.m. The man allegedly pushed a cart fill of alcohol out the front of the store. Employees gave chase and the man left and cart and ran. Police are attempting to identify the thief.
A resident reported a dead raccoon at Storvik Park. It was found and disposed of.
Officers received multiple reports of gunshots around 4:20 p.m. in the area of Heart Lake or Mount Erie. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the source.

A caller reported her service dog wandered away from her place of employment. The dog was later located and reunited with his owner.
Officers were called to speak with a 38-year-old Anacortes man who was being difficult at the hospital. Officers advised that he would be removed if he continued to cause issues.

An employer called to request a welfare check after an employee did not show up for work, which was out of character. The employer later received a call from the employee and police also confirmed that she was ok.
A 47-year-old Anacortes woman reported someone had rummaged through her vehicle between 10 p.m. on the 22nd and 7 a.m. this morning in the 1300 block of 37th Street. Nothing was missing and there was no sign of forced entry.
A 4-month-old pug was reported missing from the 1600 block of 11th Street. The dog was later found in a neighbor’s yard.
A 68-year-old Anacortes man reported someone tampered with his mailbox in the 1200 block of 34th Street. He told officers he went to get his paper around 6 a.m. and saw several pieces of mail in a ditch near his mailbox. Later in the day, neighbors brought over a package addressed to the reporting party that had been opened. Estimated loss of a drone with camera was about $65.
A 65-year-old Anacortes woman reported her vehicle was prowled sometime since the 22nd in the 2000 block of L Avenue. It did not appear that anything was taken, though the vehicle was rummaged through and the trunk lid left open. There are no suspects.
An Anacortes woman visited her bank after her card was declined at an area store and discovered more than $2,500 in fraudulent charges over the past two months. She told officers she has no idea how anyone was able to access her card information. The investigation continues.
An employee found a white powder in a plastic container in a park restroom in the 600 block of Seaferers Way. The officer noted the substance was likely cocaine. As there was no video surveillance, the substance was booked into evidence for destruction.
A 32-year-old Anacortes man reported someone rummaged through his vehicle in the 1100 block of 37th Street overnight. About $2 in change was stolen. There are no suspects.
A resident called to share video surveillance footage after hearing about vehicle prowls in the 37th Street neighborhood. Officers viewed the footage, but were unable to identify the likely suspects. The caller noted a vehicle parked on the side of his house was rummaged through.
A 60-year-old Anacortes man retrieved his found wallet, including several hundred dollars in cash, after a Good Samaritan turned it in to the police department after finding it at a local park.
A 41-year-old Anacortes woman reported being purposely hit with a shopping cart at a local grocery store around 8 a.m. on Dec. 22nd. She and her spouse were leaving the store when a man walked directly toward her and pushed his cart into her. She exclaimed at being hit and the man reportedly yelled back and refused to move. The woman walked around him and left. Officers reviewed surveillance video and confirmed the woman’s account, noting that there was plenty of space for the man to get around the couple. Officers did not recognize the suspect.
A 35-year-old Anacortes man faces charges of DUI and driving with a suspended license after crashing a four-wheeler around 3 p.m. near Island View Place. He was transported by aid to the hospital for injuries sustained in the accident. He reportedly told officers he had 3-4 beers and officers noted a six-pack of beer in the bed of the vehicle. Several neighbors and a passer-by were tending his injuries when officers arrived. The man agreed to a voluntary blood draw at the hospital. Charges are pending.
Officers responded to a report of three teenagers spray painting a concrete retaining wall. They said they were on private property and had the owner’s permission to paint the wall. The property owner was contacted and confirmed they had permission.
A 67-year-old Anacortes man reported a $48 Bonanza rummy game was stolen from his front porch after it was delivered in the 1300 block of 27th Street. A neighbor confirmed seeing the package on their front porch before it was stolen. There are no suspects.
A 86-year-old Anacortes man reported a suspicious person in his backyard in the 2000 block of Cove Place around 5:45 p.m. He noticed motion lights go off in their side yard and instead of the wildlife he was expecting, he was a male walking toward their private backyard. The caller confronted the man, who appeared alarmed and walked away.

A 62-year-old Anacortes man reported a vehicle prowl sometime in the last several days in the 3600 block of N Avenue. Missing is a $75 blow torch. There are no suspects.
A 69-year-old Anacortes woman reported her purse was stolen out of her vehicle while parked in the 400 block of O Avenue the evening before. She returned to her vehicle from seeing a movie and realized it had been prowled.
A 78-year-old Anacortes woman faces a charge of assault 4th after reportedly throwing two cups at an employee at the care center where she lives. One hit the employee and another broke when thrown against a wall. She was reportedly upset that the employee helped another resident before her. It is the second time the woman has been charged after assaulting an employee.
A 58-year-old Anacortes man reported his vehicle had been prowled overnight in the 2000 block of L Avenue. A $200 radar controller for a boat was taken. Some people walking nearby found a bag with family photos, which officers are trying to identify the owners of.
A 26-year-old transient man was ordered banned from a grocery store after having previously stolen items. The man reportedly told officers he figured he was going to get trespassed as there was an issue regarding donut holes in the past.
A 34-year-old Anacortes woman reported the theft of outgoing mail, which included some checks in the 3500 block of Cedar Glen Way. She said she put mail in on the box of Dec. 16 and several days later noticed fraudulent credit card applications and was later contacted about an attempt to cash a stolen check. The investigation continues.
Christmas Day, 2019
A 41-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on a charge of domestic violence assault and malicious mischief after his wife called around 1:30 a.m. saying he’d been drinking and pushed their Christmas tree down and broke other items around the residence. An argument started and the man reportedly pushed over the tree and shoved his wife when she tried to call police. He was booked into jail.
An officer recognized a 33-year-old Anacortes man walking in the 3400 block of Commercial Avenue around 8:15 p.m. and confirmed he had a felony warrant. He was taken into custody and during a search officers found a baggy with dried oil that was identified as marijuana has oil as well as a second baggy with a white crystalline substance, later confirmed to be meth. He was booked into jail and faces additional felony drug charges.

A 74-year-old Anacortes woman reported the theft of a package off her front porch in the 2600 block of Fir Crest Blvd earlier in the week. It appears the package was delivered on Dec. 23. When her son called on the 24th to see if she had received it, she realized it must have been stolen. Estimated loss is $55.
An officer completing a call at the hospital recognized a 31-year-old Oak Harbor man there and confirmed he had a warrant. The officer placed him under arrest on the warrant. The man told officers he was unaware he had a warrant, which officers deemed a plausible story, and was at the hospital for the birth of a relative’s child. Officers also talked with the man’s employer, who said he is a high-performing employee. After discussing the matter with a sergeant, it was determined the man would not be booked. He was given a new court date and released.
A 49-year-old Anacortes woman called for advice on how to talk to her adult son about his suspected drug use. Officers provided some options.
A 75-year-old Anacortes woman reported someone stole the contents of a package form her mailbox in the 2700 block of Oakes Avenue. Estimated loss is $4.
